F. Vattel Cherry is the founder of Vattel Cherry's Bassrespänse, a collective of four improvising double bassist/composers. Their first recorded effort was an interpretation of Strange Fruit for a Billie Holiday tribute CD produced by the Baltimore CityPaper. Vattel has studied with bassists Linda McKnight, Keter Betts and Fred Hopkins. He has worked with many brilliant musicians including, Charles Gayle, Brother Ah (Robert Northern) , John Tchicai, William Parker, David Murray's Big Band, Cecil Taylor's PTHONGOS and Charli Persip's Superband. On over a dozen CD's as a sideman, Vattel has two CD's as a leader, Is it because I'm Black and For Those Who Heal. |
Is It Because I'm Black Is It Because I'm Black is Vattel Cherry's first solo CD. Released in 1998, this recording is one of the finest acoustic bass performances to come down the road in a long, long time. "Cherry is best known, perhaps, for his work with tenor saxophonist Charles Gayle and others in the realm of free-style jazz. For this recording, the bassist reaches back to his roots, with poignant though fairly straight versions of timeless classics such as Go Down Moses, Wade in the Water, and Sometimes I Feel Like Motherless Child. He does stretch out, particularly on his own compositions...but it is his bass that carries the day. Its rich sonorities ring through with grace and elegance." ---Steven A. Loewy, All Music Guide.
