Funky
Donkey, Vols I & II Luther Thomas Human Arts Ensemble Lester Bowie (trumpet) Joseph Bowie (trombone) Charles Bobo Shaw (drums) J.D. Parran (reeds) Luther Thomas (alto saxophone) also with: Floyd LeFlore (trumpet) Harold Pudgey Atterbury (trumpet) Abdella Ya Kum (percussion) Rocky Washington (percussion) Marvin Horne (guitar) Eric Foreman (bass) Funky Donkey is an ultra-rare document from the Black Artists Group (BAG) archives, led by alto saxophonist Luther Thomas, with a full force free-funk ensemble. The cd also features an unearthed second volume of unadulterated DONKEY FUNK (featuring a long piece written by saxophonist Oliver Lake), which was recorded at same performance, prepared for release but never issued. Finally, almost three decades later, it's available for the first time! These great recordings featuring the Bowie brothers: late-great Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpeter Lester Bowie, and defunkt-founder/trombonist Joseph Bowie, as well as reed player J.D. Parran (fresh from recording with The Band!) and versatile drummer Charles "Bobo" Shaw. Out of print for 20 years, Funky Donkey delivers massive mid-70s creative sounds; Great Black Music, St. Louis style! The cd features the fully restored gritty original artwork, lost when the LP was reissued briefly on vinyl on the Circle label in the early 1980s. Also includes very funky unfinished cover artwork for Vol. 2. Both sessions have been remastered from the original tapes, and sound much better than the vinyl ever did. 3 tracks in 64:19 minutes :::>>> Tell A Friend About This CD From Drimala If you like this cd, you might also enjoy listening to: Banana (Luther Thomas Human Arts Ensemble) Spirit House (Moondoc's Jus Grew Orchestra) Mining Our Bid'ness (Carei Thomas and Feel Free Ensemble) WOWOW (The NOW Orchestra) Compostions for Creative Orchestra (George Lewis and the NOW Orchestra) Freedom & Unity (Clifford Thornton New Arts Ensemble) |
