Our Bid'ness Carei Thomas (piano) William R. Lang (tenor saxophone) George Cartwright (alto and soprano saxophones) Steve Sandberg (baritone horn, tuba) Brock Thomas (bass) Brian Roessler (bass) Alden Ikeda (drums) Tim DuRoche (drums) Eric Coursen (drums) A revelatory debut album by a 64 year old pianist/ composer may beg the question: where has Carei Thomas been all this time? Well, he's been "mining" his own bid'ness far from the music industry preferring to build communities where artists can flourish. No dilettante here though. This man cut his chops with Sun Ra in 1959 and then his own group in the late 1960s with Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Jerome Cooper and Wadada Leo Smith. This cd is a collection of live concerts Thomas did in 2000 in Minneapolis working with various incarnations of his Fell Free Ensemble. Of particular note is George Cartwright's work on all but one track. Since Curlew, Cartwright has remained fairly quiet and it is great to hear him still performing with such intensity. The music runs the gamut from gorgeous ballads to combustible free jazz testifying and comes with our highest recommendation. 8 tracks in 59:21 More From The Rack One Final Note Review :::>> Tell A Friend About This CD From Drimala If you like this cd, you might also enjoy listening to: Banana (Luther Thomas and the Human Arts Ensemble) Freedom & Unity (Clifford Thornton and the New Art Ensemble) Underground Railroad (Joe McPhee Quartet) Dark Day (Fred Anderson Quartet) Funky Donkey (Luther Thomas and the Human Arts Ensemble with Lester and Joseph Bowie) |
