Travis Baker’s bass playing reflects his interest in avant- jazz, contemporary classical music and the raw energy of punk rock. As an improviser he draws on all these diverse elements to create a unified personal vocabulary and approach. Whether in solo performance, in duo with bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck, or with his various ensemble projects (Meathook Ensemble, Travis Baker Trio, Little Stitches) Travis has been described as a gutsy authoritative voice on his instrument. Baker is also active as a composer, writing solo compositions for double bass, a chamber jazz sextet and music for Agenbite, a 13-piece improvising ensemble. He has also played with Wayne Horvitz, Gino Robair and Raymond Strid.

Sara Schoenbeck, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, received her Bachelor's degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she realized that the life of an orchestral bassoonist could never satisfy her. She is now satiating herself by focusing on contemporary performance, improvisation, and challenging the limits of the bassoon.  Her main teachers are Stephen Paulson, Julie Feves, Vinny Golia, and Wadada Leo Smith. She is a member of the contemporary ensemble, the Digital Renaissance Consort and Vinny Golia's large Creative Ensemble.

Line 15:::

Yesca One

Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon)
   Travis Baker (bass)

Sara Schoenbeck is one of those artist who continually walks that very fine line between contemporary classical composition and free improvisation.  On Yesca One, she is joined by Vancouver bassist Travis Baker in a series of 11 short duets that explore the full sonorities of both instruments through free improvisation and composition.  The music is intimate and intense.

Comes highly recommended.

11 tracks in 39:08 minutes.
