Chris Jonas works between worlds. Formerly a painter, Jonas regards music as an abstract physical art, speaking in terms of musical objects and textures, densities and colors. He designs performance sets and spaces to frame his music and contain his ensembles. Since his move to New York in 1991, he has participated in a cross section of the City's creative ensembles, including Cecil Taylor's New York ensemble, as a long term member of William Parker's "Little Huey" Creative Music Orchestra, Anthony Braxton's Ghost Trance Ensembles, two saxophone quartets -- the Brooklyn S.Q. (with Fred Ho, David Bindman and Sam Furnace) and the Great Circle S.Q. (with Randy McKean, Dan Plonsey and Steve Norton) -- and many other projects, recording albums for Soul Note, Black Saint, FMP, Aum, New World, Braxton House and others.

Currently Jonas leads the critically acclaimed ensemble "The Sun Spits Cherries." Jonas also leads the Brooklyn and Cleveland Creative Orchestras. Jim Szabo of WRUW calls him "The Johnny Appleseed of Creative Music" referring to his workshop concerts with local creative musicians in cities all over the US.

Chris Jonas is a member of the NYC composers' collective CIC.

The Vermilion
   Chris Jonas (soprano saxophone)
   Myra Melford (piano)
   Joe Fiedler (tenor trombone)

Chris Washburne (bass trombone)

Andrew Barker (percussion)

The Vermilion is Jonas' second release with his ensemble "The Sun Spits Cherries."  This time the group is joined by Myra Melford on piano which only works to the benefit of all.  Myra works between the group's arrangements, moving the music along rhythmically as well as harmonically.  For those with a serious interest in the possibilities of a unique combination of instrumentation and the blur between improvisation and composition, this cd comes highly recommended.

8 tracks in 60:21 minutes.
