The Test Tubes CD Cover

Jacques Israelievitch is an internationally known violinist and concert master of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with several recordings of concert music to his credit.

Reinhard Reitzenstein's work has consistently taken him into processes exploring ways to interconnect nature, culture, science and technology. He works in several parallel areas: indoor installation and sculpture using cast, spun and welded metals, wood, glass, photography, digitally processed images and other materials; large scale drawings; outdoor tree-based installations and sound art. Among his numerous installation pieces are collaborative sound sculptures with Gayle Young.

Jesse Stewart is an award-winning percussionist, composer, instrument builder and visual artist.

A composer, performer, and designer of musical instruments that use unorthodox tuning systems, Gayle Young has been involved since the late '70s in composition and sound sculpture related to the design of innovative musical instruments and approaches to listening. Exemplary of these tendencies, she designed and built the Amaranth, a 24- stringed instrument with a moveable bridge system that allows it to be tuned to any set of pitches. Prior to this, she designed the prototype of Columbine, a percussion instrument using an expanded just tuning. She is also the author of The Sackbut Blues, a biography of Hugh Le Caine, and the editor of Musicworks Magazine, journal of Sound Exploration.

Some of the most exciting creative new improvisational-based music today is being heard in the sound sculpture environment.   Seldom is this music recorded, so this recording is a real treat.

Recorded at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre at the University of Guelph, Ontario. The performances were part of an exhibition of sculptural work by Reinhard Reitzenstein. The exhibition was in two parts, a sound installation entitled Klang Bau and a sculptural work entitled Wilderness and the Scientific Method consisting of pyrex glass objects referencing laboratory devices. In Klang Bau two large curved wooden resonators are attached to the walls, amplifying attached strings played with fingers or bows. The strings form two-dimensional y-shaped structures which create complex sound combinations.
