Hans Jorgen Fjellestad studied composition and improvisation with George Lewis at UCSD and piano with Krzysztof Brzuza. Fjellestad has composed for film, video, theater, dance and has presented his music and video art in the US, Europe, Japan, Mexico and Brazil. He is active in the Southern California experimental music scene, performing regularly as a solo improviser-pianist, and as keyboardist with various creative music ensembles. Fjellestad is a founding member of the Trummerflora collective dedicated to creative music in San Diego, and co-creator of zucasa.com.

Dana Reason is a Canadian born pianist, composer, improviser and lecturer. Although she has created a reputation for herself as a compelling improvisor, she is equally at home performing contemporary music such as the works of Sophia Gubaidulina, Elliot Carter, John Cage, Linda Bouchard, Pauline Oliveros, among others. She is particularly interested in working with contemporary women composers and promoting their music through lectures and performances.

Red Sauce Baby is the latest offering from musician and composer, Hans Fjellestad.  A collection of six compositions that feature Hans in solo, duet and large ensemble settings, the music in Red Sauce Baby is best described by Hans himself from the liner notes, "A living breathing spontaneous animal, improvised music can get inside the in-between spaces.  It is freedom and mobility, with a rich and diverse heritage.  The personal story form the individual improvisor, interacting with stories told by other improvisors to create a collective narrative, meets another kind of discourse embodied by the audience, the physical space, the community,  Energy moving back and forth creating larger stories, strange intermixtures, and unique dialogical spaces where musical expression branches into sociocultural territories.  That is where the most exciting and relevant musical experiences live."

This disc comes with our highest recommendation.

"It's his best work to date...he's trying to break the sound barrier." -- George Lewis, San Diego Reader

"Anything but run of the mill...Red Sauce Baby is an intriguing work of art." -- Lisa McGee, Future Music

"Strong in both composition and content, a genuinely intriguing balance of collective improvisations, guided compositions, and sound art.  A soundtrack for your ears." -- Gary Lopez, New Creative Music
