Drimala Records Press Release
Drimala Records proudly announces the release of Shadow & Light featuring Joe Giardullo, Joe McPhee, Tani Tabbal and Mike Bisio
Hampton, VA - April 15, 2002 - When terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11th, multi-reedist Joe Giardullo considered canceling his scheduled recording session. Instead, he and Joe McPhee, Mike Bisio and Tani Tabbal responded to the day's events with healing music. Shadow & Light was recorded on the morning of September 11, 2001 a hundred miles from downtown New York City during the tragic confluence of events that changed our world forever...and as a result, the music stands apart. A tribute, yes. A memorial, yes. A prayer, yes. An anguished cry from deep within, yes. The music is all of these, and none of these.
The session that was planned for that morning did not occur, but the session that was captured gives voice to the collective emotions of four musicians performing at the very highest level of improvisation and their art...giving an entirely new understanding to being in and responding to the moment. Each working alone, trying to reconcile images and feelings that could not be readily processed, yet somehow finding solace in making music with one another. Quite simply that was the session that was captured, and that is the session we bring you as Shadow & Light.
About The Artists
Multi-instrumentalist, composer and performer Joe Giardullo reemerged as a performing and recording artists in the early 90s after a 10-year hiatus. Since then he has as performed as a group leader and soloist in venues throughout the world. While well known for his work with Joe McPhee's groups, more recently Joe Giardullo has begun leading his own groups in concerts and festivals worldwide. This is Joe's eleventh recording, and the first of three recordings featuring Joe Giardullo that will be released in the next year on Drimala Records.
Multi-instrumentalist, composer and performer Joe McPhee has been a leading figure in the free jazz movement since his early recordings in the late 1960s. Although Hat Hut Records was founded in 1974 to document Joe's work, he remained relatively unknown in the United States until the early 1990s. With long overdue recognition finally coming his way, Joe has been able to tour, perform and record virtually non-stop for the past decade. His discography includes over 50 recordings.
Bassist Mike Bisio has often been compared to Charlie Haden for his distinctive approach and gutsy sound. In 1994, former Downbeat editor Art Lang described Bisio's sound and style as being reminiscent of Ornette Coleman's great bassist, David Izenzon.
Percussionist and drummer Tani Tabbal has been working as a professional since the age of 14 when he anchored the Oscar Brown Jr group. Since then Tani has recorded, performed, and toured with Roscoe Mitchell, David Murray, James Carter, Geri Allen, and Cassandra Wilson to name a few. He also performed in the seminal Detroit-based avant-garde Griot Galaxy led by Faruq Z. Bey.
