FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Drimala Records Announces The Release of Its First CD, Southern Extreme, featuring a the veteran debut of Joel Futterman, Kidd Jordan, and Alvin Fielder.
Hampton, Virginia -- July 1st, 1998. Drimala Records is extremely proud to present its debut recording project, Southern Extreme. This 67-minute CD features Joel Futterman, Edward Kidd Jordan, and Alvin Fielder. Collectively, this group of veteran musicians represent probably the most under documented group of musicians from their generation. Each of these musicians has played a pivotal role in the development of the jazz tradition, yet their artistic documentation has, for the most part, been limited to hard to find European or out-of-print releases. Their music deserves to be heard...which is why we selected this particular recording to be our first.
About the Artists
A few little known data points that will help place these musicians in the context of today's jazz tradition and industry:
Alvin Fielder performed on the first AACM album, Sounds with Roscoe Mitchell, and was actively involved with the founding of the AACM in the early 1960s.
Joel Futterman was the only other piano player that Jimmy Lyons ever recorded with, including Jimmy's last recording, the seminal 1984 album, Inneraction, that also featured Richard Davis on bass.
Edward 'Kidd' Jordan was one of the founders of the New Orleans Jazz Festival and knighted by the French government for his musical contributions to the European community.
Southern Extreme was recorded live on November 21, 1997 at Mississippi State University. The CD features seven tracks including a poem commissioned by Drimala Records exclusively for this release.
A Few Critical Notes
"This is 'cutting edge jazz' played by the people who will carry our music into the 21st century." (Richard Bourcier, Jazz Review)
"This interesting release from this new label shows that the paths blazed by Ayler, late Coltrane, and early Pharoah can still be fruitfully trod today." (Robert Spencer, All About Jazz)
"Fans of improvised jazz should not hesitate to seek out this group, not only to ensure that Jordan earns recognition on a wider level, but also because the trio has many highly-rewarding musical stories to tell." (Scott Hreha, Signal To Noise)
"For those who value jazz experimentation at its most audacious and fiercely committed, the viscerally exciting music-making on this disc will prove difficult to resist.." (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune)
"It is a collaborative effort by three empathetic musicians who are in tune with nature, science, and each other. Their rapport is obvious, and the product is engrossing. You will like this union." (Frank Rubolino, Cadence)
