Zusaan Kali Fasteau pursues a direction of world music that grows out of the Coltrane legacy. While this is recognizable in terms of sound and form, what is more striking is the spiritual intensity which pervades even the music's quietest moments. Fasteau freely utilizes her considerable talents on an astonishing variety of western and world instruments, including piano, sanza, mizmar and various flutes, though I found her unique vocalizations and powerful soprano sax playing to be the most moving.

Having spent most of the past two decades abroad performing with the late Rafael Garrett as the Sea Ensemble, Fasteau has yet to achieve recognition commensurable with her talent and experience. Now based in her native New York she is hopefully gaining a reputation here as well. Unfortunately, women in this music, as elsewhere, have rarely been given their due. This woman is one of the few to have so consistently maintained and expanded her vision. I highly recommend this CD and would like to give special mention to the presence of drummer Rashied Ali on three of the disk's twelve tracks. -- Jeremy Graham
