Gerd Dudek joined his brother's big band in the 1950s and played their until 1958.  During the early 1960s, he played for two years in the Berliner Jazz Quintet, in Karl Blume's group, and in Kurt Edelhagen's orchestra until 1965.

Then he became interested in free music and joined Manfred Schoof's Quintet.  Dudek took part in the first sessions of the Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966, and played with until the 1980s.  He also worked with many other European free musicians and composers including Alexander Schlippenbach, Albert Mangelsdorff, Loek Dikker and The Waterland Ensemble And European Jazz Quintet.   Dudek played in a trio that recorded at the Workshop Freie Musik in Berlin in 1977 and later worked in groups led by Mal Waldron and Tony Oxley.

Since then, Dudek has worked as a sideman with most of Europe's leading improvising groups and large ensembles.

Gerd Dudek (tenor and soprano saxophones)

John Parricelli (guitar)

Chris Laurence (bass)

Tony Levin (drums)

Hard to believe for someone of Dudek's stature who has been performing since the 1950s, but this is his debut album as leader, and leave it to Evan Parker to record him.  Dudek has long been associated with European's free jazz movement having worked with virtually every leading improvisor on the continent over the past 40 years.  On this recording he is joined by longtime compatriot Tony Levin, the very soulful John Parricelli on guitar, and Chris Laurence who has long been associated with John Surman's work.

Just as interesting is that Dudek has selected a number of straight-ahead classics from Kenny Wheeler and others to showcase his leader and arranging talents.  But the result will leave you breathless with its beauty and soul....this is definitely not a man that is angry with the world, but finding beauty in every turn of a note or phrase.

Comes with our highest recommendation for some seriously laid back soulful Sunday morning listening.
