Rules of Engagement, Vol. 2
Rules of Engagement, Vol. 2
features longtime musical
collaborators bassist Dominic Duval and Joe McPhee
in their first duo recording in over five years. This recording finds two of the world’s leading
improvisers performing at the height of their creative energies. The sparseness and intimacy of the duo context
provides room for their music to breath with a clarity of purpose and vision rarely heard.
The disc features Joe
McPhee in a short monologue explaining his music… a treat never before
heard on a recording. Also features beautiful interpretations of the
traditional classic Amazing Grace (Dominic Duval’s closing
signature piece) along with an eloquent sophisticated version of B.
Kaper’s rarely heard classic, While My Lady Sleeps, first
introduced to jazz audiences by John Coltrane.
In
choosing to record three sets of duos with "old friends", Dominic Duval's
"Rules of Engagement" project sets out to explore in depth exactly what such
relationships can yield in an artistic context. The music testifies not only to a
great sense of complicity and virtuosity, but, more importantly, to a deep mutual
affection and a real understanding of what it means to play music....and the results are
richly rewarding.
