Nation Time CD Cover

Joe McPhee (reeds, trumpet, pvc pipe, voice) composer, multi-instrumentalist and poet, has been on a musical search through improvisation, conceptual studies and composition, encompassing various aspects of acoustic and electronic music, which has brought wide acclaim and recognition worldwide. His PO Music series inspired by philosopher Dr. Edward de Bono's work with lateral thinking uses positive provocatioon to move from fixed ideas in order to discover new ones. PO is a language indicator to show that the process of provocation is taking place and that things might not be necessarily what they seem. It is his hope that the name Joe McPhee will accomplish the same result.

McPhee's work extending the free jazz idiom was partially responsible for the founding of HAT HUT records, and McPhee has been widely documented as an international voice in new music. His collaborations with Pauline Oliveros, Peter Brotzman Octet, and Dominic Duvall, among others, have produced very amazing music. "Joe McPhee stands out as a musician who adeptly combines a highly developed sense of clarity and precision in playing with and adventurous spirit of collaboration."-Stewart Mostofsky

Nation Time
   Joe McPhee (saxophone)

Recorded in December, 1970, at Vassar College, this outstanding set of dusty grooves is the first recording in the Unheard Music Series. (The other three CjR records will be reissued one at a time over the next year).   Comprised of three parts hardcore free jazz and two parts r&b/funk blowout, it's an irresistible combination; a killer recording that reveals a great deal about the soul side of Mr. McPhee.

Newly mastered from original tapes with complete original cover, original liner text and new liner notes by Ken Vandermark.
