Aercine
Aercine
features drummer
Harvey Sorgen, bassist Steve Rust, pianist Michael Jefry Stevens, trumpeter Herb
Robertson, and violinist Mark Feldman. This is the group's first release for Drimala
Records and the first meeting of Feldman and Robertson on record. The dynamics and
aesthetics these five great musicians bring to the music transcends each individual's
creative voice.
Resting
quite comfortably between the dense precise aesthetics of Béla Bartók and the swinging
easy open strides of Stéphane Grappelli, the music on Aercine is further
evidence that "Jazz is a trans-idiomatic music with a cosmic vocation whose
relatively mysterious origins lie in the explosion of various traditional musics,
'deported' and later 'magnetised' by the blues." This definition of jazz by the
young Portuguese trumpeter, Sei Miguel, probably describes the music as well as one
possibly can.
As
Dan Warburton writes in the liners, Aercine is glorious proof that the mark of a
musical idiom's maturity and universality is that its principles and conventions can be
understood, assimilated and ultimately improvised by musicians all over the world.
Or, to quote trumpeter Axel Dörner about the super conscious nature of improvisation,
"This music is supernatural, and that's what I like about it. We have a network
across the whole world of people interested in it." And now you're part of that
network.
