Records proudly announces the release of Rules
of Engagement, Vol.1 featuring longtime musical collaborators bassist Dominic
Duval and alto saxophonist Mark Whitecage in their first duo recording. This
recording finds two of the world’s leading improvisers performing at the height of
their creative energies. The sparseness and
intimacy of the duo context provides room for their music to breath with a clarity of
purpose and vision rarely heard. About The Artists Bassist, Dominic Duval, is one of the finest and most prolific bassists on the contemporary scene, having played and recorded with some of the greatest names in jazz and new music. Duval's recent tenure with pianist Cecil Taylor's trio has cemented his reputation as one of free jazz's important figures. He combines the strings of classical music with provocative improvisatory compositions to produce what Jazziz describes as "moments of intense lyrical beauty and harmonic progressions of stunning intricacy." He is an inventive artist and his use of his effects board is both subtle and persuasive. Known for creating sonically ravishing ideas, Duval is a bass innovator of international acclaim. Long considered a musician’s musician, Mark Whitecage has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists including Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian, Jeanne Lee and Dave Douglas, in a career spanning four decades. His music reflects an approach to jazz composition and improvisation popular in the vibrant New York loft scene of the late ’60s and early ’70s, in which relatively simple written frameworks allow for extended improvisation. About The Label Drimala Records was founded in 1998 to focus on improvisational music in all its forms. The label was the first to bypass traditional distribution routes and go directly to the listener via the internet.
