Drimala Records Press Release
Drimala Records announces the release of two new recordings, Blackwater Bridge featuring Gary Hassay and Anne LeBaron and Horizon Event featuring Dennis Warren and the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble
Hampton, VA - July 8, 2002 - Drimala Records celebrates four successful years of operations with a duet of new releases. On the first release, saxophonist Gary Hassay returns to Drimala Records with his new recording Blackwater Bridge. On Blackwater Bridge, Hassay has the utmost of symbiotic partners in harpist Anne LeBaron. Together, they engage on the deepest possible levels...probing and anticipating each other's biorhythms with utmost sensitivity. The confluence of Hassay's saxophone and LeBaron's harp surpasses the confines that are commonly adhered to. As the pieces unfold, vistas that owe no allegiance to any predetermined tonal system come sprawling into view...landscapes that defy ordinary perspective. The second release, Horizon Event, features drummer Dennis Warren and the latest incarnation of the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble (FMRJE). This is their first label release in over four years. Dennis Warren has been a vital factor on the creative music scene for several decades. He has the innate ability to forge the congealing elements of pulsating rhythm with the explosive power of spontaneous improvisation to produce must that is simultaneously infectious and challenging. The combination is a powerful and compelling intoxicant that will not release you until the final note is sounded.
About The Artists
Alto saxophonist, Gary Hassay, has been performing with various groups since the late 1970s, both as a leader and as a sideman. His large ensemble, "Dr. Vincent Sakeeda's Attack Ensemble," founded in 1979, was a tour de force of free music which drew critical acclaim. Hassay's first highly praised album on Drimala Records, Another Shining Path, with William Parker and Toshi Makihara, was viewed by many critics as one of the best recordings of the late 1990s.
Anne LeBaron is a composer, harpist, and educator at the forefront of innovation. Her earliest work as an improvisor extends back to the early 1970s when she was a member of the Raudelunas with Davey Smith, LaDonna Williams, Craig Nutt, and Nolan Hatcher. Anne is renowned for her pioneering methods of developing extended techniques and electronic enhancements for the harp. Leading innovators of jazz and other forms of creative music, including Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Derek Bailey, and Adam Rudolph, have engaged her in performance and recording collaborations.
Drummer and leader of the FMRJE, Dennis Warren, began studying and performing with Milford Graves and Bill Dixon in the early 1970s. In 1989, he formed the FMRJE and has continued the group as a working entity ever since. The group has served as the launching platform for many artists, including trumpeter Raphe Malik and guitarist Tor Snyder. Dennis has never compromised or wavered in his vision for his music. It takes its inspiration from no single time and place in the jazz continuum, but from the relentless searching of John Coltrane, the soaring vision of Jimmy Lyons, and the focussed passion of Archie Shepp. The result is music that is always relevant to the Now.
