FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Drimala Records Announces The Release of Its Second CD, Another Shining Path, Featuring the Ye Ren Trio.
Hampton, Virginia -- March 20th, 1999. Drimala Records proudly announces the release of Another Shining Path. This 69-minute CD features Gary Hassay on alto saxophone, William Parker on bass, and Toshi Makihara on percussion, collectively known as Ye Ren. Recorded in August 1998, Another Shining Path documents the New American Jazz sound; rooted in the blues, vibrant, free, and continually moving forward.
About the Artists
Gary Hassay has been performing since the late 1970s with various groups, both as a leader and a sideman. His large ensemble, "Dr. Vincent Sakeeda's Attack Ensemble," founded in 1979, was a tour de force of free music which drew critical acclaim, and helped establish Allentown, an eastern Pennsylvania town, as a vibrant home of highly creative improvisational music.
Gary Hassays tone is reminiscent of that big 50s tenor sound, tempered with an edge that comes from surviving in the 90s. But Garys tone is only the backdrop for a compositional approach that causes the listeners spirit to soar beyond the confines of our daily boundaries and limitations. On the sheer strength of his own desire, Gary Hassay has persevered against great odds to maintain an artistic vision filled with clarity, honesty, and purpose.
William Parker has been a driving force for three decades in keeping the mislabeled/misunderstood notion of free jazz alive and in the front of many listener's consciousness. Considered by many to be the greatest bassist ever to have played avant garde jazz, today his name is mentioned with equal frequency with the likes of Dave Holland, Charlie Hayden, Barre Philips, and Barry Guy. A veteran of more than a 100 CD projects, William has sought to continually develop an art form far too young to repeat itself. William and Gary have performed together in many live venues, but Another Shining Path represents the first time these two veterans have documented their art in the studio.
Toshi Makihara has been a leader in promoting live improvisational music in the Philadelphia area for almost a decade. A devotee of the live improvisational performance experience, Toshi has performed with many experimental music ensembles and dance and theater companies. He studied percussion with Yoshisaburo (Sabu) Toyozumi in Tokyo and composition with Joel Thome in New York. Another Shining Path represents the first electronic capture of the live improvisational experience that Toshi has followed all his musical career.
