For Immediate Release
Drimala Records announces the initial lineup of performing artists for its celebration of contemporary improvisational music, Soundtime RI 2000, at AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island.
Hampton, Virginia -- June 20, 2000. Drimala Records in association with Sublingual Records and Makihara Productions will sponsor the first annual celebration of contemporary improvisational music, Soundtime RI 2000, on September 8, 9, and 10. This three-day festival will take place at one of the Northeast's hottest growing centers of creative energy and performing arts, AS220, in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Soundtime RI 2000 will feature a wide variety of contemporary new improvisational music ranging across electronica, avant rock, jazz, modern classical, global, and simply sounds beyond known limits. The common denominator in the music will be honesty and an open spirit towards an improvisational music aesthetic. Philip Egert, President of Drimala Records, says "We are putting three days of music together that blur the lines between genres and labels. We have invited artists whose music crosses over many boundaries."
The artists appearing at Soundtime RI 2000 reflect the diversity of the festival's mission. The current artist roster includes the eclectic sounds of the Alec Redfearn and the Eyesores and the fiery collective improvisations of the STREAM Orchestra under the direction of Jason McNeal from Providence. From New York City will appear dorgon and Laura Cromwell formerly of some of the city's hottest underground bands, Dim Sum Clip Job, God Is My Copilot, and Buffalo Daughter. Also appearing from New York City will be the revolutionary free jazz sounds of the Gold Sparkle Band and the Ryan Sawyer Trio. From Boston, the highly acclaimed Saturnalia String Ensemble will perform with veteran jazz multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter. From Baltimore, KRILLL will appear lead by bassist Vattel Cherry whose performances have been compared by many to the young Mingus. From Baltimore, internationally heralded percussionist Toshi Makihara will bring his critically acclaimed trio featuring Seattle-based saxophonist Wally Shoup and Boston-based bassist John Voigt. From points unknown, electro-acoustica percussionist Joseph Benzola will bring his unworldly sounds down to earth. The improv troupe, Improv Jones, will appear throughout the festival between the music. And, the whole extravaganza will be MC'd by the king of AS220's stage, Lenny Hoffman. Additional performing artists will be announced within the next couple of weeks. The festival will kickoff on Friday evening, September 8, at 8:00 with five different performances. The festival will resume on Saturday evening, September 9 with another five exciting creative new music performances. On Sunday, September 10, the festival will begin at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon. Tickets will be on sell at the door. Admission will be $15.00 each evening and $8.00 for Sunday afternoon. Festival tickets for all three days are available for $30.
