Toshi Makihara
Born in Japan, Toshi Makihara has been a central figure
in the vibrant improvisational new music scene in Philadelphia for the past decade.
A devotee of the live improvisational performance experience, Toshi has performed with
many experimental music ensembles and dance and theater companies. He studied
percussion with Yoshisaburo (Sabu) Toyozumi in Tokyo and composition with Joel Thome in
New York.
For
Makihara, drumming is a mystical experience. His intention and aspiration is to
"become" Music rather than to "produce" it. Music in this sense
is the very realization of universal spiritual principle, or in short,
Nature.
Makihara did his doctoral work in religion at Temple University, Philadelphia where he
"re-dis-covered" his Music. From this "re-dis-covered"
philosophical and spiritual foundation, Makihara creates his original music using
percussion instruments from various cultural traditions blended with his unique home made
instruments, sound objects, and electronics.
Toshi's first recording,
Another Shining Path, represents the
first electronic capture of the live improvisational experience that Toshi has followed
all his musical career.
